Kastoria, Greece and Fur

Kastoria is one of the most important centres for the production, processing and trading of furs, worldwide. The long tradition, excellent quality and international connections that have been developed over the years, make fur industry one of the most important exportation sectors of the country as well as an extremely productive field for national economy.

The art of producing furs was developed in the Byzantine times, probably when the first artisans from Kastoria learned this art in Constantinople. In the 16th and 17th century, the guilt of the Kastorian furriers in Constantinople is at its peak and many of its members hold positions of great prestige and influence.

Lady Gaga attacked by PETA over fur coat

International music superstar Lady Gaga has come under attack from the world’s largest animal rights organization the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) over her alleged wearing of a fur coat while in Bulgaria.

PETA said in an open letter that the American pop star sported a large Armani fur coat while in the Balkan country.

PETA’s Vice-President Dan Mathews issued the letter after Gaga apparently let her anti-fur stance take a back seat in wearing the jacket.

Lady Gaga has now issued a lengthy statement about her choice to wear what’s believed to be a real fur coat in public. The singer posted a statement on her social networking site LittleMonsters.com in response to backlash from her otherwise faithful fans.
